FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is the coconut oil used in Coconut Essentials products unrefined?
Yes. All our food products include the highest quality coconut oil. The coconut oil used in most Coconut Essentials products is unrefined and cold-pressed, meaning it undergoes minimal processing to help retain the oil’s natural nutrients, flavor profile, and aroma.
The one exception is our Natural Baby Oil, which uses a fractionated coconut oil. This means the oil goes through a physical process to remove some fatty acids, allowing it to remain in a liquid state at all temperatures. It’s important to stress that this is still a pure and chemical-free oil. However, the process technically means it’s refined.
Do you refrigerate Coconut Baby after opening the container?
No. There is no need to refrigerate our Coconut Baby product after opening. The product will remain in its natural, solid, scoopable state when kept at room temperature (ideally 72°-75°F).
Coconut oil liquifies above those temperatures and otherwise stays solid. Coconut Baby is still perfectly natural and safe to use in either state.
To ensure the freshness of Coconut Baby oil:
- Keep the lid on tight when it’s not in use to limit exposure to outside moisture and air, which are leading causes of spoilage.
- Use clean hands or a spoon when removing the product from its container to prevent contamination.
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources, to preserve its shelf life and nutrient profile.
How do you use Coconut Baby to treat cradle cap?
To use Coconut Baby oil to treat your baby’s cradle cap, these are our recommended steps.
- Warm it up: Rub a small amount of Coconut Baby in your hands until it melts.
- Apply: Massage a thin layer of oil into their hair, being careful around the soft spot.
- Wait: Let the oil set for around 5 to 15 minutes. This allows the organic oils time to soak in and soften their skin.
- Brush: Use a soft-bristled baby brush or comb to gently sweep away loosened flakes.
- Repeat: Depending on the severity, you can repeat this 2 to 3 times per week until their scalp clears up.
Are you supposed to rinse the coconut oil from the scalp after treating for cradle cap?
Leaving a small amount of coconut oil is safe for their skin and provides a little extra hydration. You should always rinse the majority of coconut oil from their scalp after treating cradle cap, since rinsing the scalp helps clear oil buildup and keeps the scalp healthy. Warm water and a little gentle soap will help clear away extra dead skin.
If the scales are stubborn when rinsing, apply warm water to the baby’s scalp before future applications. In the end, it’s entirely up to you and what works best for your baby’s needs.
